    FEATURED ARTICLE

    Nursing Leadership (CJNL), 18(4) 2005: 36-40
    Waiting Lists and Nursing
Joann M. Trypuc and Alan R. Hudson

    Abstract:

The recent editorial, "Waiting Lists? What Waiting Lists? Not Nursing's Problem" (Pringle 2005), challenges nurses to "step up to the plate" with a pithy and solid analysis of the waiting list issue from a nursing perspective and with recommendations for ameliorating it. Although we are not nurses, and are thereby disqualified from stepping up to the plate, we believe that our experience of working for over a year to implement Ontario's Wait Time Strategy qualifies us to comment on the game.

On November 17, 2004, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, George Smitherman, officially announced Ontario's Wait Time Strategy. The strategy is designed to improve access to healthcare services in the public system by December 2006 by reducing the time that adult Ontarians wait for services in five areas: MRI and CT, cancer surgery, cardiac revascularization, cataract surgery and total hip and knee joint replacements. "Wait time" is defined as the time elapsed between the decision to order a scan or surgery and completion of the procedure.

    Racism in Nursing
    by Tania Das Gupta

“Most nurses of colour experience everyday forms of racism, including being infantilized and marginalized. Most reported being “put down,” insulted or degraded because of race/ethnicity/colour. A significant proportion of nurses, non-white and white, report having witnessed an incident where a nurse was treated differently because of his/her race/ethnicity/colour.”

    Healthcare Quarterly, 10(4) 2007: 84-88
Impact of Information Technology on Human Resources in Healthcare
    Mehran Anvari

    Abstract:
Incorporation of advances in information communications technology (ICT) into the workplace has had a major impact in human resource utilization in sectors of the economy where it has occurred in a substantial manner, such as manufacturing and financial services. While some benefits of ICT have been realized in healthcare, the full impact of its benefits will only be realized if it is incorporated in a systematic form, rather than in the current patchy and uneven manner seen around the province and across the country to date. Furthermore, provincial governments are dedicating significant financial resources in aligning some of these ventures, such as electronic medical records and digital, filmless imaging systems. However, there is significantly more to be done as healthcare finally embraces information technology and recognizes the full force of its impact in the next two decades. For the purpose of this discussion, I analyze the impact of information technology on human resources in healthcare but do not discuss the necessary component of planning for infrastructure, which has to go hand in hand with this conversation.

Supervisors Missing Link in Employee Health

The quality of the relationship between supervisor and employee is perhaps the most important workplace determinant of health, says a new research report.

The Missing Link: Supervisors' Role in Employee Health Management from Shepell·fgi reveals that many organizations do not provide supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employee absence or address problems in employee productivity or behaviour.

The majority of respondents (84%) to a recent online survey conducted by Shepell·fgi report that supervisors in their organizations do not receive 'real time' employee absence data, while 81% report their organization does not have a structured process in place that is consistently used by supervisors to address intermittent absence problems.

Moreover, supervisors are not provided with the tools they need to effectively manage a return to work process, with 64% of respondents reporting that their organization does not have a structured process in place that supervisors use consistently to support employees returning to work from an illness or disability.
